Growing up can be difficult for any child, and today's
parents face more challenges than ever. All of us are trying hard
to be good parents, but the stresses of instant gratification, the
pressure to perform, and the pervasive influence of electronic media
make it difficult. Sometimes family members feel overwhelmed and
negative patterns of interaction can take root.
When this happens, my training
and experience have taught me that it’s often helpful to work
with children as well as with parents and the entire family. Many
techniques can be used with children who are too young to express
themselves well with words. Through the use of child-centered play
therapy and sand tray therapy children are able to express themselves
non-verbally as they bring forth their inner thoughts and concerns
in a relaxed and protected space. In some situations I find that
Filial Therapy and Theraplay are effective methods for treating
children with problems connecting with their own emotions or with
parents/caretakers. (For more information about these techniques
please refer to the "More about therapy"
page.)
Children respond to my light-hearted
nurturing attention and parents appreciate my parenting tips and
coaching. The result is that the children gain a better understanding
of themselves, while the entire family learns more satisfying ways
of being together.
